Zeisberger Trail and Parks (ZTAP), Friends of Tuscarawas County Parks, and Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition are seeking to raise more than $75,000 in local dollars to support a $1.4 million grant from the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT). The grant will support the development of bicycle lanes along State Route 416 in Tuscarawas County.

The 5-foot wide bicycle lanes will stretch more than three miles along SR 416, from State Route 259 to the Village of Tuscarawas. As part of the ODOT grant, the local grant recipient is required to raise 5 percent in matching local funds, equaling $76,175 for this project. Local contributions from ZTAP, Friends of Tuscarawas County Parks, Haman Family Foundation, and Zimmerman Foundation currently total $31,000.

ZTAP has been hard at work improving walking and bicycling in mid-Tuscarawas County for eight years. The Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition is assisting Tuscarawas County and ZTAP in managing the project as part of its technical assistance agreement with the County.

“Not only will this provide commuters and exercise enthusiasts a safe route between New Philadelphia and Tuscarawas, but also re-establish the historical connection between Cleveland and Tuscarawas along the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail,” said Dan Rice, president and CEO of the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition.

ZTAP is requesting contributions, large and small, to raise the remaining funds for this project. Contributions can be made online at the Facebook donation page, or by mailing a check to Friends of Tuscarawas County Parks, c/o Jesse Rothacher, P.O. Box 23, Sugarcreek, Ohio 44681. Visit ZTAP.org or email ZTAP’s Joe Krocker at [email protected] for more information.
